Optimising workplace mental health

 

Mental health issues are becoming more prevalent.  The number of adults reporting moderate to high stress levels has risen to 76%, up from 40% three years ago.

“Poor mental health costs UK employers up to £45 billion annually…a 16% increase since 2017…due mainly to a significant increase in presenteeism.” (Deloitte, 2020)

And the list of worrying statistics goes on!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW about MENTAL HEALTH & NUTRITION:

 

Mental health can be impacted by a combination of factors.  One of which is a person’s nutrition choices (food and fluids).

 

🍻 Whilst alcohol and 🍟 comfort food or 🍩 sugary snacks might give you a boost and help you feel better in the short term…

🤕 They can contribute to your stress levels, raise anxiety and lead to mood swings, fatigue, headaches and feeling low.  They’re not helpful when it comes to supporting you with your mental health and your ability to juggle all the demands of work and life!

🥗 Nutritionally balanced meals and snacks where you combine a small amount of starchy carbohydrates along with complex carbohydrates, protein and good fats) are more beneficial for your brain health, gut health and overall wellbeing.  As is reducing caffeine and alcohol intake.

🥗 Nutrition, including hydration, can decrease or increase productivity levels by up-to 25%! And who would consciously refuse having more energy and feeling better in themselves?

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW about MENTAL HEALTH & BREATHING:

 

Taking time to PAUSE AND RESET is so beneficial when the overload and overwhelm kicks in.

Encourage employees to take 5 abdominal breaths, using the diaphragm to breathe deeply. 

Inhaling fresh oxygen through the nostrils, to allow the nasal hair to warm and cleanse the air before it enters the body and into the lungs.  This helps to energise the body and brain.  

Then exhaling slowly the carbon dioxide and other toxins that the body no longer needs. 

Deep Abdominal Breathing also activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest mode) and allows the body and mind to restore calm.

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW about MENTAL HEALTH & MOVEMENT:

 

Creating time to MOVE MORE enables us to RE-ADDRESS THE IMBALANCE between brain and body that can be created from long periods of brain activity (e.g. sitting at the desk all day). 

The human body is designed to move! Moving the body also releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural way to help us feel good.

 

3 STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO OPTIMISE WORKPLACE MENTAL HEALTH AS A SENIOR TEAM MEMBER:

 

1️⃣  If your workplace provides tea and coffee for your employees, consider widening the choice to include caffeine-free fruit, herbal teas and water.

WHY – because caffeine can contribute to increased stress levels, sleep issues and weight gain.

 

2️⃣ If your workplace provides a biscuit or sweets tin swap it for fruit such as apples, pears and berries.  They are packed full of antioxidants to support optimal mental health and overall wellbeing and combat stress.

WHY – They are packed full of nutrients such as Vitamin C, and antioxidants, to support optimal mental health and overall wellbeing and combat stress.

 

3️⃣ Send an email to your employees to help raise their awareness to any of the above changes you have made as a company to support their health and wellbeing and why you have made them.  

 

**If you have already made the above changes, or if you are unable to make them, you can inform them solely of the health tips. 

**You could also consider asking them to reflect on one thing they could swap to improve their nutrition and hydration to support their mental health and overall wellbeing

**By raising awareness you are educating them and it’s the first step to empowering them to become happier and healthier people.  They may also feel more valued by you as their employer and their sense of belonging, job satisfaction and loyalty may increase.
