Top 5 Tips for Navigating Christmas for HR Managers

The holiday season is a time for celebration, but for HR managers, it can also bring unique challenges. From managing time-off requests to maintaining productivity, it can be a tie of additional pressures.  This month’s blog provides 5 tips to help you navigate the festive season.

1 – Inclusivity in the workplace

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. We can embrace inclusivity in any festive activities by respecting diverse traditions. Including themes or decor that reflect a variety of cultural practices can help ensure that all employees feel respected and included.  Those employees who do not celebrate should also feel that the workplace is a safe space to abstain from any festivities without fear of judgement.

2 – Seasonal Stress

The end-of-year rush and holiday obligations can lead to burnout.

  • Allow employees to opt out of any workplace Christmas activities without judgement.
  • Not all employees wish to socialise with their work colleagues.  For some employees, the anxiety ahead of the Christmas party may lead them to drinking a lot before arriving to ‘help’ ease the nerves!
  • Not all employees want an alcoholic drink so ensure that a safe environment is created where an employee can ask for a non-alcoholic drink without fear of peer pressure or ridicule.
  • If your workplace is doing a ‘Secret Santa’ set a budget, or allow employees to opt out without judgement.

3 – Open Communication
Create a safe environment where employees can voice concerns about any festive season challenges. Proactively check in with staff to address any potential issues early. Signpost employees to your workplace mental health and wellbeing resources to help them cope.

4 – Maintaining Productivity
With the influx of sugary and sweet festive treats, productivity can dip, mental health can suffer and stress levels can rise.

  • Balancing snacks, treats and meals can help to optimise the effect they have on mental health, mood and energy levels
  • Eating the mince pie or the chocolate with a handful of nuts or seeds (health, allergy and medication permitting) can help ease stress, reduce energy slumps and fluctuations in mood

5 – Encouraging abdominal breathing can help with focus, productivity and relaxation!
  1. It brings fresh oxygen into the body to support all of your body’s needs.
  2. It helps with your mental health
  3. It supports your nervous system and helping it switch from fight, flight and react mode (sympathetic) to rest, digest and choose your response mode (parasympathetic).

In fact it’s so good for you I recommend doing at least 5 deep breaths whenever a new demand lands in your lap (e.g. your inbox, a text message, a request from an employee, an invite, a family issue).

By considering these top 5 tips fostering an inclusive, empathetic, and proactive approach to the festive season, HR managers and workplaces can keep employees engaged and productive while ensuring the holiday season is a joyful and less stressful time for everyone.
